4 Reasons Why Kids Should Explore Math & Art.
1. It’s Fun! Inform your children or students it’s time for math and then pull out the colored pencils and see their eyes light up. Let’s admit it, math has gotten a bad rap and anything we can do to make it more appealing is well worth the effort.
2. Math and art are closely related. There is a strong connection between math and art. Many of the core skills in math and art are closely related. Both disciplines require spatial reasoning skills and the ability to recognize patterns. Artists and mathematicians use geometry in their work — including shapes, symmetry, proportion, and measurement.
3. Improved math scores! Art improves spatial reasoning. Improved spatial reasoning has been shown to increase math scores, especially in girls!. There are several bodies of research showing that through art, especially projects that focus on perspective and other spatial skills, all students can improve their performance on standardized math tests. Girls seem to benefit most, maybe because their spatial skills tend not to be as developed as their male counterparts. Luckily spatial reasoning is not a fixed ability and can be improved with practice and art!
4. Nature! Studying math and art reveals interesting facts about nature. In nature, math, and art we see the Fibonacci Sequence, Fractals, geometric shapes, and concentric circles, just for starters. Tying these wonders together and showing our children how disciplines like math, art, and science do not live in silos but are intertwined demonstrates the importance of being a well-rounded student.
